Overkill in both cases
Either will give very good quality audio output for simple 2.1 .
Technically the onboard (soundstorm) audio is supposed to be better (close thing though) but obviously at the cost of some CPU utilization, where as the seperate 5.1 Live card will use less resources than the onboard.

It's of no consequence to try out the nForce2's onboard audio because you are forced to buy onboard sound with the motherboard no matter which board manufacturer you go with. So just try it out for yourself and see what you think.
