Which image should I use? 1

I am a relative newbie with Cisco switches and routers (I've only done some minor configuration changes - our switches got dropped in my lap). I'd like to update the IOS on my existing Catalyst 2950 switches (WS-C2950-24) before I set up VLANs, but I'm not sure which image I should use.

The release notes for the current version, 12.1(22)EA2, say to check the output of the "show ver" command to find either "Running Enhanced Image" or "Running Standard Image". However, neither of those lines appear. I do see a line that says "Processor is running Enterprise Edition Software".

The current version I'm running is 12.0(5.3)WC(1) (flash filename "c2950-c3h2s-mz.120-5.3.WC.1.bin"). According to the "dir" output, I have about 7.7 MB total space in the ROM, with 4.7 MB free.

Does anyone have advice on which image I should use (EI or SI, crypto or non-crypto), or if I may need a different software release (if mine is unsupported in the new version)? Thanks for your help!

I believe all the latest images have incorporated both images into one file and it will load the features that are needed for your particular switch which according to a matrix on Cisco is running SI software . Believe the latest is 12.1.22 for a 2950 . If you aren't going to use web management just get the .bin file otherwise you will need the .tar file .

The Catalyst "SI" image stands for "Standard Image". It is much less expensive to purchase a switch with only SI on it, as it has less features and less capability.

Your "Show Ver" command above shows that you are running "Enterprise Edition" software, which is referred to as enhanced, or "EI".

The EI image will have the most features available, if you download the latest version. Best of luck!
