My problem is that after installing 2 differn't programs, then restarting, my computer won't go past the blue, white, and black "windows 2000" loading screen. I'm looking for the file that I can edit in dos, and take out the lines that have to do with the 2 programs starting up. None of hte options in the F8 menu work. not safemode, debuggin, or any of the others! I have alot of work on this computer, and don't want to lose it. (I'm writing of a friends computer) Does anyone know where I can find the file? Thank you!

For more information, see my other post about the windows boot screen. Thank you.

the safest way to save ur work is remove the harddisk from ur comp.
attach it to a comp running win2000.
take a backup of all ur work.
delete the program and its file causing trouble manually.
then put the harddisk back in ur comp and try booting.

u can also try booting from tthe win2000 cdrom
select repair and then follow the screen instruction
choose console when prompted.u'll be in dos mode then from where u can edit the file u want.

the prob is that I have 2 windows cd's. One is a beta verseion that I can boot off of, repair off of. The other is the pro version. I CAN"T BOOT OFF THE PRO VERSION. :( Also, I don't know of anyone else near me that is running win 2000. I know win98 wouldn't recognize NTFS.
As to the second reply, I can use a 98 startup disk, and get to the command prompt, thats not a problem. The problem is, HOW DO I KNOW WHAT FILE TO EDIT??? Thats All I need to know, is what file... Thanks to both of you for trying to awnser! It's a hard question.

P>S> It wouldn't hurt to try the emergeny repair>counsel. As long as I don't have to reinstall win 2000!! it takes ages, and all for 2 small programs. :(

if u know which program is causing the trouble
u can wash out the whole dir of the particular program under the prog files dir

The whole restart or freez happens JUST when the screen would change to a blue windows backround. so I know its something that windows is trying to load, but failing. Something funny happend when trying the counsel recovery. Currently, win2k is installed under E:/winnt. In the recovery counsel, it only gave me the option of an installation in C:/winnt!! Not only that, but none of my passwords would work!!! I'm now throughly confused. :( My next step is to try to make this HD a SLAVE, use an old HD as a master, and start up, I think win2k installation is still on my old HD, I'll try it.

THe problem is that m y old HD is flaky, and gives out sometimes. Oh well.

Soo, what you mean to tell me is that unlike win98, there is no boot file that I can manually edit from dos, to make certain programs not start?

UPDATE!!! I'm now on my computer, running off an old HD. Now, I know what programs they were, and where they are stored, but how do I make it so that when the other HD with windows starts up, it won't load them. I just want to know that. I'm sure there's a file somewhere.......
