Where do my deleted files go?

I have a win2x Server and win98 clients. I have redirected their My Documents and Desktop system folders to directories on the server. When they delete something from these folders or any share on the server, you can't find them in their desktop recycle bin or even the server's recycle bin.

-Where does the file go?

I think I understand what's happening: Files stored on a machine (server) but being deleted remotely (workstation) will not be sent to the workstation's recycle bin since the file doesn't reside there and it won't be in the server's recycle bin since it wasn't deleted from their.

-Is there a way to redirect where your files get deleted to, so that if I delete by mistake, I'll be able to recover it?

There are third party offerings which allow files deleted across a network to be cached/stored until you really remove them... When I checked into it the software ran arounf $300... perhaps 2 years ago.

thank you mjstanton. I read the article and probably look into purchasing the application. But in my particular case where would I run such an application and will it work? According to the article the files where deleted AND stored on the same machine. In my case, the files where on a server, but deleted on a workstation.

bluwhaleca: that sounds like the kind of thing I'm looking for. Do you know where I can find any or the names of them? Some keywords I could use to look them up in Google or something?

Thanks all

Have you considered using the Server 2000 backup utility on the directories in question to make regular normal and incremental backups so that if you need to get one of these files back, you have a backup source to pull them from?

Catadmin,

No, how do I do that or where can I read about that? Also, by using windows 2000 Backup Utility, will that conflict with my current scheduled Veritas Backup Exec backups that I'm doing?

Thanks

"salvage" is the main netware tool used to recover deleted network files and quicker than doing a restore

if you mention this keyword to certain vendors they will know what you mean and be able to recommend a win2000 version of it "Work to live, don't live to work"

"The problem with troubleshooting is that sometimes it shoots back"

I am about to purchase "Undelete Server" by Executive Software (via a recommendation). It seems to be what you are looking for. I have visited their website ( and it seems to have a few good reviews on it (Windows & .NET magazines). It is a bit pricy at $250 but management here thinks it would be worth the money if it was ever needed. I have found it cheaper from pricegrabber.com but when purchasing from cheap sites you sometimes get what you pay for.

I use Un-Delete on a couple network servers- it's a great product. Simple to set up, not much overhead. Instantaneous recovery of lost files is much easier than tape restores. I set it monitor frequently changing data directories. Good stuff.
