where can i go to promote a BDC to a PDC for Windows 2K?

You don't have BDCs or PDCs with Windows 2000 servers.

I have a server1 running AD.. and I have just installed server2 also running AD on it.. I shutdown server1 and try bing the domain and it still try to ping server1. What do I need to do to have it point to server2 as the domain server? because I want to take down server1 for repair and upgrade.

thanx for your help.

Whats pointing to server one? If you have two AD servers running do they both belong to the same domain? If so you should allow server two to also run as as global catalog server. To do this you need to go to Start>administrative tools>AD Sites and Services. The expand AD Site and Services>Site>Default-First-Site-Name>Servers click on the + next to server two expand NTDS Setting right click>properties and you will see a box that if you place a check mark in you will become a global catalog server. This will allow you dommain to run as normal if server one was ruuning. You will need to make sure DNS is setup right as well.

I have the GC setup on server2 already and DNS is also installed on server2 and is working find.

Both servers are on the same domain, when I take down server1 and ping the domain name (domainname.local) it points back to server1 instead of server2. I want to make it so that server2 has control of the domain name so when I ping for the domain name that it points to server2 instead of server1 which is shutdown.

thanx for your time and help.

from what your saying it sounds like you want cascading servers. When one server fails or is shutoff the other server picks up the role of the first. This can be done but only with Windows2k Advanced server.

I don't think he wants that

LoJack FMSO roles have to also be transferred before demoting the AD controller. Options now are

1) Rejoin server1 to the domain, transfer FMSO roles ( demote server1

or

2) Seize the FMSO roles, and clean up the DNS records manually

2) Seize

well I have windows 2000 adv server running on both the servers. And pretty much what I wanted to do was take server1 down and have server2 as the domain controller. And I'm going to repair and upgrade server1 and bring server1 backup but as a backup domain controller.

During a test that I ran.. I shutdown server1 and try to log on and off at a workstation and that was successful because I was able to load the user profile.

The only problem was that... the DNS server is on server2 and when I try pinging the domain it gives me the IP address of server1 instead of server2.

ex.
c> ping domain.local
pinging 10.10.0.1 <-- server1

should it be:
pinging 10.10.0.2 <-- server2 since server1 is offline?

Well.. I transferred the FMSO roles from server1 to server2 but the thing is when server1 is shutdown and I ping domain.local that it is looking for server1's IP address. Is this a DNS issue and how do I go about to resolve it?

thanx,
LoJACK
