Hello,

I built a server out of old used stuff that a few friends were never going to use.

Here is the dirt...

mobo: SIS 530/5595
RAM: 328MB
HDD: 30 Gig 7200RPM (that wasn't free)
OS: RedHat 7.3 (text only server)
CPU: 150MHz Pentium

Notice anything wrong? The 150MHz CPU? Yeah, that is my problem. I can't find one!!! Copying a file takes 67% of the processor. That is not good. The system is very, very stable, it's just really slow.

Does anyone know where I can find a 550MHz Intel socket 7 (ya know, the regular old 370 pin flat CPU)? Actually, it doesn't have to be a 550, but faster than 150.

I know I can over clock the heck out of it, but I don't feel like running A/C duct work to the case just to keep it cool enough to stay running.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...I don't care if it's used, new, boxed, unboxed, or overpriced (well, if it is priced so high that I could get a mobo/CPU combo, forget it).

(Note to the watchdogs: I am not trying to invoke selling, solicitation, or a financial trasaction of any kind. I know the rules for tek-tips.com, and I have the utmost respect for them. If it weren't for tek-tips.com, and all the good folks that keep it running, and those ever-patient-gurus who answer my silly questions, I'd still be a lamer. I am just really stuck in trying to find a hardware componant.)

Thanks for the help in advance! ;-) Hope I was of some help...

Howdy:

Try ebay.. Chances are there will be something there that will meet your needs.

"550MHz Intel socket 7"

Intel quit making Socket 7 chips with the 233MHz MMX chip, went with the Pentium II and Slot 1 module, which also replaced the Pentium Pro/Socket 8 chip. AMD kept going to 550MHz with their K6-2 3D Now! [3D Now! is AMD's version of MMX] chip and your board may support it, check the data on the SiS site if you don't have the book. Older boards didn't support MMX or 3D Now! features, didn't know about them.

"the regular old 370 pin flat CPU"
Socket 370 is a Celeron or Pentium III chip.

As mentioned, try for some of the older stuff. I didn't see any Socket 7 stuff listed on last time there.

Hey all,

Thanks for the info. I am at work right now, I'll chekc those sites when I get home. I just wanted to jump in here real quick and thank you folks for the help.

Berton, the specs on the SIS site are up to 550Mhz p54 (or something like that, I can't really remember) Celeron, all of the Pentiums...It's just that the 150Mhz that's in there now is way too slow.

Thanks again.... Hope I was of some help...

The CPU socket on the motherboard is marked Socket 7, Socket 370, Socket 5, Socket 8, etc.

I looked up SIS 530/5595 and it is a chipset on the motherboard, not the motherboard brand/model itself. The chipset does not support the Celeron/Pentium III Socket 370.

These are all Socket 7/SuperSocket 7 chips:
6X86 • Cyrix MII • K6-III • Pentium • WinChip 2 • WinChip C6

The Pentium P54C had speeds up to 200MHz, the P55C-MMX up to 233MHz [may have been faster Mobile processors for notebooks].

This is from and their implementation of the SiS chipset:

"Supports Intel Pentium P54C/P55C-MMX, AMD K5/ K6/ K6-2/ K6-3,Cyrix M1/M2 and Pentium Processors.
AMD K6-3 450/400, AMD K6-2 475/450/400/350
AMD K6 166Mhz to 300Mhz
166Mhz to 200Mhz Intel Pentium Processors and up to 233Mhz Pentium processor with MMX technology.
Cyrix 6X86MX PR166+~PR233+ and up to 333Mhz M-II Processor"

This is from:
"The Super7 AGP/VGA chipset, SiS530/5595, is designed to provide a high performance/cost effective solution for all current socket 7 CPUs."
