Firstly, apologies to mods if this is in the wrong thread.

Just after some quick advice really;

I am setting up SUS on a new Win2k server, and about to go round and make the registry alterations to our clients. I will set the desktops to update at 3am, but don't know what to do about the laptops that people take home with them.

What sort of times work best for laptop users?

First off, you might want to save your shoe leather and not "go around making registry changes", you can do this via GPO.

To your question, that is a difficult one to answer. It will depend on when you expect the notebooks to be turned on AND in the office. You might consider an alternate time such as 9AM and advise laptop users that their login may take longer. Or you might consider 12:00PM so updates can happen while people go to lunch.

I hope you find this post helpful. Please let me know if it was.

Thanks for the reply. I have shied away from policies so far as we are on an NT4 domain with XP/2000 clients and I'm not sure how best to go about it.

I did some checking and you could actually set those machines to the same time. They will download their updates using latent CPU time. So in other workds when the laptop signs onto the domain again it will download in the background when the PC is not doing anything else.

I hope you find this post helpful. Please let me know if it was.
