Bit sparse on details. Try removing all hardware not necessary for install (eg, all cards except video, second hard drives, CD writers, Zip drives). Try installing again - if ok, put hardware bits back one at a time. If still problem, look at memory (use 1 stick if you have 2 - or get one from elsewhere), slowing down cpu/memory speed (can usually do this in the bios).
I agree with Mr.wolluf but can add that : check all your hardware is in W2k HCL or if not, remove it from the system during reinstallation. When you 'll finish the process , obtain w2k drivers for your "removed" hardware , install it one by one.

One thing I have seen a couple of times during win2k installs that DO NOT involve re-formatting, is an EXTENDED hang during the process. Sometimes for well over an hour. The first couple of time that it happen, we re-booted and re-installed but we ended up discovering that it was simply the "magic" of WINDOWS. If we left it alone, it would eventially get around to finishing the installation.
Overnight didn't seem to help the matter. I even took out my battery and my second memory card. I guess I'll try a longer waiting period. Note that there is no activity on the hard disk from what I can see.
This was originally a pre-installed windows 2000 I believe... Somebody must have tried installing Windows 2000 over the top of an existing W2000 system on the Dell Inspiron 7500.
Hello,
I am experencing the same problem, Win2k re-install is hung up at configuring com+. I have let it run now for over 12 hours. Should I keep letting run, or try something else?
When performing an upgrade the Setup Wizard generates a compatibility report. Though this was not strictly an "upgrade" but a reinstall I have a feeling that it will have generated one. Try accessing:
%systemroot%\winnt32.log
If it's not there or reveals nothing or you can't access it try telling W2k to specifically generate a hardware compatibility report by running
WINNT32 /checkupgradeonly
This should run the first part of the installation but should check only the hardware. It generates a text document. Might be worth looking at. And indeed saving.
If this doesn't work try downloading the
CHKUPGRD.EXE utility from
Win2k is part way through its install and will continue each time you reboot until you get rid of it.
Mind you, I think WINNT32 has to be run from the desktop. It sounds like you no longer have a desktop.
Try substituting WINNT for WINNT32 and booting from a DOS floppy. Track down your CD and go to i386 and then run WINNT with the switch. Try WINNT /? first to see what it can do. It may not do this task.
WINNT32 with the checkupgradeonly switch is meant to be run before you do the install.
Mind you you could try booting with a DOS boot disk and seeing if the file WINNT32.LOG has been created and is available that way and editing it with EDIT.COM (have it on your floppy).
Why don't you try downloading that file I mentioned from MS. It might run from a DOS disk. Read up on it first.
