When is an incremental not an incremental?

I have a Notes backup that runs daily. It is one Notes client within a Notes group.

The monthly is approx 100GB and the daily is an incremental which, again, is 100GB.

The group uses a Daily incremental schedule and has "force incremental" chosen.

I know Notes folders will change drastically Daily, but sure not the whole folder?

Look at the log files. If NW 'does not find' a full, it must override your schedule and do a full all the time. This might be the issue.

Hello,

check also with mminfo if your saves are marked as 'full' or as 'incremental' :

mminfo -avot -c your_client -r "name,level,totalsize(20),savetime(20)"

Have you many time difference between client and server (it's a cause of 'forcing' full saves) ?

Thanks folks,

These are returning as incrementals strangely enough. The C: etc are from a different group so shouldn't interfere with the backup. The performance of this NOTES group is strange though considering the size of the backups involved.

I don't know how Notes is running, but NW takes the last modified date of a file to consider if it is elligible to a full or an incremental backup. After that, it saves ALL the file (not only chunks/sectors/clusters modified).

So with the mminfo command, what is the 'misfunction' ?

Incremental save of NOTES:_2 works perfectly because 2 saves launched at few minutes of interval make the second not saving data.

As 605 said, have you "No full backups of this save set were found in the media database; performing a full backup" in your daemon.log ?

From the daemon log, these files do tend to be incremental.

The thing is, because this backup takes approximately 50 hours to complete (and is a daily incremental) it runs to completion once every 2/3 days.

Because it's a production server, and files are being accessed while the backup is underway, does this mean a file already backed up, if it changes in the duration of the backup, will be backed up twice and maybe even as often as it changes?

Should I look to be doing a level backup as opposed to an incremental? Does anyone have any suggestions? Splitting the Notes backup hasn't worked.

If files are written during save, you may experiment messages in your savegroup-completion file like that :

* <WARNING> : warning while saving /proc/57358/cred
* <WARNING> : Warning - `/proc/57358/sigact' size grew during save

Should I look to be doing a level backup as opposed to an incremental?
Levels backup are just incrementals, but with a finest level of increment.

May be you could take a look to the networker module for notes ?

Lotus Notes is consists og many databases, e.g. every mailbox is a database.
Incrementell backups of this databases will be backups of redo-logfiles.
You have to check how your Notes Server is configured, if it uses circular logging, noc incrementell backup scan be done.
Your mminfo shows som streams are incremental, i think they consist of static data lik dictionary files etc.
So you have to consult with your Lotus admin to chenge the server configuration.

Actually, it's so normal for the networker to do SYSTEM STATE:\ & SYSTEM DB:\ with FULL level what I think you should do for others is to check the backup script in c:\prog...files\legato\.... and make sure there's no override backup level, ofcourse after checking your schedule first !!
