When I open a .doc, Word tells me it is already being used

Hi all,
Using Office '97 on Windows XP Home.

Whenever I open a .doc either through Explorer or Word/open file, a msg pops up telling me "The document is already in use by c:\ path...\user (user being the name of the profile), do you want to make a copy?" If I say "yes" then I have a copy as well but if I click "Cancel", the file opens normally and I carry on working.
I tried renaming the profile from "User" to "Glenn", restarted the PC and tried again with the same results. All the files give the same results and none of them are Read Only or protected etc etc.
All Windows updates are applied, antivirus up to date and no spyware present. It is only an annoyance as everything else is running perfectly so I'm stumped as to what is going on :-(

When you installed Office 97, did you install it using an Administrative User to install it, or another type of user?

I've had problems with this kind of thing in the past when I installed applications using a guest or regular user account, as compared to an Admin account.

Hi cL...that was a quick reply!! "User" was an administrator and the only profile present on system. No passwords etc, just a simple install

This is a very stupid question-

There exists the capability to have the Explorer set up with filenames as links - so you only have to click them once. Are you, by any small, insignificant chance, double-clicking the document, causing it to open twice if you have them set up as links?

hehe sometimes the silliest seeming questions produce results but no, "single click" is switched off.

Just to add to confusion, if I agree to "copy" that file is also affected.
