I have a problem with my Windows XP Pro system. Every time I put a DVD into the drive, the computer reboots, and then brings up a message "The system has recovered from a serious error". This used to only occur with original DVD's, but now it does it with all. It is irrespective of which dvd drive I put the disc in, but the problem never occured before I got my DVD burner. However, even without the DVD burner in the system, this still happens putting a DVD into the DVD-ROM drive. Please help!!

No, I know better than to go near Zone Alarm. I will also add that this problem started under SP1, but installing SP2 had no effect. Other than this, my computer is running extremely well. The only other problem I have is a few incompatabilities with my video drivers (for Asus V9520 Video Suite). However the rebooting problem was occuring before I got the new video card.

Click on start > Right Click on My Computer > Click Advanced Tab > Click on Settings button under the "Startup and Recovery" heading > Untick Automatically Restart > Click OK.

Now your machine will not automatically restart but will give you a blue screen with an error message.

Post back with that message, or check the event viewer. Start > Control Panel > Admin Tools > Event Viewer. There will be errors that match the date and time of the restarts.

Automatically restart has already been turned off, yet it continues. That's why it doesn't make much sense to me. I'll also add that autorun / autoinsert notification are disabled also.

I only replaced the power supply a week ago. I was running a 350W, and now I'm running a 400w. It should be plenty! I had the problem with both PSU's.

I'm seconding Greg's thought on this one. There should be some listing in the Event Viewer that will help give us all a bit more direction.

I would have thought so, however, there are no listings in the event viewer that correlate to the times of the restarts. I am really at a loss on this one. Thanks guys for all your ideas, I'm sure we'll get there eventually!

I would have to agree with Bcastner just b/c you got a bigger power supply doesnt mean anything! Try pulling out your other rom etc! Then put a try running a dvd in that burner and see what happens! If it work then most likely it is a power supply issue. I dont think it would be your ram b/c it would most likely come up with an error! But if the dvd rom doesnt work then wallaaaahhh the dvd rom is bad
!!!

I tried disconnecting virtually every non-essential device so the power supply should have plenty left, but still the same result. I tried changing DVD drives - same result. However, this time I received some listings in the event viewer. They don't mean much to me, so I'll paste all events in the minute of the reboot, maybe one of you will understand! I have put the source and type before each event.

Not sure if this is any help. I had a similar problem after updating my drivers for my sound card to the Creative ones. If I left them as Microsoft drivers it worked fine.

Probably something different btu thought I'd mention it!!

okay, thanks. I'll give that a go. I don't remember exactly when the problem started, but it may have been around the time of my new motherboard or even my new video card.

My vote would be Video Card Drivers. So many problems present themselves if the wrong or problematic driver is installed.

On more than one occasion I have let windows update update my video card driver and had serious problem.

Visit the manufacturers website and download the latest drivers, reapply them even if they appear to be the same version.

Also you say that it happens when you insert DVD's, I wonder if this is a problem with a software application you have got set to automatically play the films?

Try the following, Start > My Computer > Right Click on DVD Drive > Select Properties > Click on AutoPlay Tab > Select "Select an action to perform" > Click the "No Action" option > Click Apply > Click OK > Now try inserting a DVD to that Drive. Does it restart?

Just to restate what I was saying before.

My problem happened with my SoundCard Drivers when I placed a DVD into tmy drive and tried to watch it (didn't have to fire up app).

Setting the sound from 5.1 to 2ch also stopped it from resetting!!

Well I don't know exactly why, but by running the drive as a master without a slave fixed the problem. Weird, but at least it's working now. Thanks everyone for your help!

Are the jumpers on the back of the drive set to cable select? I have seen many times when this will cause a problem, admittedly not as drastic as yours.

No jumpers are fine. I build computers for a living - there was nothing wrong with the setup. I have tried changing the setup back to how it was (with the CD burner as a slave to the DVD-ROM and the DVD-RW seperate) and it now works. Just a computer having a mind of its own!

The problem has returned. I changed nothing. I don't understand it. The problem seems to be irrespective of drive setup. It must have been a coincedince that the problem stopped.
