When does password policy change take effect?

I am changing some of our password policy options, min. 6 characters, password duration 45 days (currently 15), lockout after 3 failed attempts.

Once I set the policy will it prompt them to change their password immediately or until they are due to expire? If someone is currently logged in will they suddenly not have access to server drives or will it prompt them to change at next login?

I would appreciate any feedback, I do not want to set this policy until I know what to expect.

To may understanding, it usually takes 90 minutes to effect the entire tree. You can enforce this by using the secedit /refreshpolicy machine_policy. If my syntex is incorrect go to Help. Hope this helps.
