I've setup some rules in outlook but they don't seem to run on new mail received, I seem to have to run them manually. do they run every time a send/receive is performed?

also, is there a way that a rule can be setup so that it will check for e-mails over a certain age and then perform a certain action on them?

thanks in advance

1. Mail rules should run when each mail message is recieved (if that's what your rule says). Are all the rules checked?

2. Not exactly, but depending on what you're after you might be able to work with one of these:
a. Autoarchive into a specific pst file after some period of time. Then do whatever you need to with the items in this pst file.
b. Create a rule that sets a flag for follow-up after a certain number of days. Then when your follow-up reminder comes up, do what whatever you need to do.

thanks for your reply smah. decided to go with the auto archive regarding the deleting e-mails. maybe I'll keep them just in case.

About the rules, the 1st and 3rd rule runs, but the 2nd one doesn't. that rule is a bit more complex, but still, if I run it works fine. The first rule says if the e-mail is through the Account X, move it to folder X unless it's from ABC. Then the 2nd one says if it's through account X and from ABC, move it to ABC and mark it as read. But they just go to the inbox and aren't marked as read either. when I go to the rules wizard and do "run now" they get run though.

Any ideas?????????/

What is the third rule that you mentioned? Make sure that 'from ABC' is exactly what you think it is. When you use the 'run now' option, do you select all the rules and run, or do you just run the one that doesn't seem to work?

Below are some threads about rules that you may want to read through. I think some have been removed from this forum and might not work, but most will. I keep saying I'm going to write a couple of rules FAQ's but haven't done it yet. In particular, read about the wildcard behavior and 'stop processing more rules'. You may want to temporarily add some rules to do some color coding - this might help to see exactly what is happening. There are some conditions where moving messages will fail, but changing text color will still work. BTW, what version of Outlook are we talking about?
