when building a web page -why name the page index? 1

Hello all you DW experts. I'm sure you are all alot smarter than me since I just started learning the program recently. Can you tell me when its appropriate to name your page index(applies to what content). Thanxs for you're help.

all index tells your server is that that is your default home page

so when someone types in

http://www.mysite.com

then it will point to your index page not

http://www.mysite.com/index.htm

you dont need to type index.htm the server picks that out automatically.

http://www.mysite.com/pages

will point to

http://www.mysite.com/pages/index.htm

its just your default page in a directory

Another important feature of the index page is preventing unauthorized visitors to look at your site index, in the event that directory browsing is enabled. This means that you can quasi-protect files from being accessed, if other's shouldn't have direct access to them.

For example, I'll set up index.html with a warning message, stating that they don't have access to this page. Then I'll put that index.html file in all directories where people shouldn't be sniffing around, like in my images folder, in my documents folder, and so on. This is usually in folders where there are no web pages.

it can be any name u want. set your server to point MyPage.html and that is your defalut page.

Index is just the most logical name as the Index page is to the book.
