When addressing an email, where do the addresses come from? 1

We have Exchange 5.5 server, client is Outlook 2002.

I have a user that addresses an email by typing the first couple of characters of a persons email address or name.

A list pops up with two choices.

One of the names is in the Global Address book. The second is not. It is not in her personal contact list either in outlook. I can't figure out where it is coming from, and I need to delete it because it is an old, incorrect email address.

I let that name select and do CTRL-K and see it in the TO: line. When I right click and select properties, it says that outlook cannot find it in the contact list.

Ideas?

go tools/services and go to the addressing tab. this will show u the possiblities of where it could be coming from When in doubt, kick 'er in the guts

r u using the corporate install of outlook. there should be tools up on the top list? if not, right click on the toolbar and hit customize. goto the commands tab and make sure tools is in the categories folder. then, u might need to restart outlook, and go tools/ options and per my instructions earlier. Alternatively, close outlook and go to the icon on your desktop, right click and go properties, this has the same effect When in doubt, kick 'er in the guts

Maybe the entry can be deleted when it is highlighted and the DEL key is pressed ?

Do you know of anyway to review the list of all addresses that will show up in that popup? It must be cached somewhere?

Outlook 2002 was installed on the Dell machine when we got it. It's now SP1. I always had the Tools command, just not Tools/Services.

I looked at Tools/Options through all of the possible screens, and also looked at the properties menu you get when right-clicking the icon, and didn't find any clues to where these addresses are kept.

I'm still interested in that if you have any ideas.

Maybe the addresses are stored in C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book\

toddster72 sory you have no idea its not anywhere in there but PAndersen you hit the nail on the head. PAnderson i have been looking for that list too, only thing i hve found( which still isnt it) is the custum.dic file which is for the custum dictionary for spell checking....it add every email address you send to to that list. i will keep you posted on the master list.

That article on the OE WAB is VERY interesting. I opened the WAB, though, on the target machine, and it was _empty_, so that isn't where this list is located. I'll see if I can find any _other_ wab files.

Did you look in Tools > Accounts > Directory Services > Properties > Advanced ?
And what about the registry ? Drop down links for IE can be found in TypedUrls. Maybe it is an idea to search the registry for the name in question ?

I think the old addresses you are referring to are being picked up from the server. When you create a mailbox it is assigned a Directory Name (on the Advanced tab in MS Exchange Admin). This name cannot be changed although just about every other attribute of the mailbox can. The only way I have found around this is to turn off the 'Suggest names...' feature in Outlook XP. (Tools | Options | Email Options | Advanced Email Options | Suggest Names when Completing To, cc or bcc fields' | Untick box). You can also delete the entry from Outlook when it pops up but it will probably come back.

All of the domain users are included in the names of people that pop up, and they are on the server, but I don't want those deleted, and in any case, users cannot delete them.

There should be a master list somewhere with all the people who show up there, but aren't in the domain.

Ok, I checked the registry and did not find the names that are popping up during addressing.

BUT, I did talk with someone who instantly knew/believed that the data was in the registry, so I'm guessing it's there, but not in clear text.

So, my question is can it be manipulated. What I want to do is see the list of names and delete some of them.

If the names are stored locally in clear text, it should be possible to find the name of the corrsponding file(s) by using Find Files (from Start Menu) containing specified text, set to (part of) one actual address.

Thanks for the idea. I just did a search of the entire hard drive (including system and hidden) and didn't find the part of the address I was looking for. So it probably isn't stored anywhere in clear text.
