Hello all,
I've been struggling with this for weeks, I have set up a secondary site on a untrusted domain, and trying to install clients using Win NT remote client installation using the SMSservice acount which is a domain admin at the 2ndary site, I do have communication between sites,I can install clients manually thru the smslogon on the dc, but no success with remote client, and the logs seem to be fine, not indicating any errors or rights issues, I did setup up the 2ndary site locally, then shipped it over seas, then had to change the subnet, and ip, since then I've been unsuccess full with any remote install, this is my 1st secondary site,
I would appreciate any help,
Thanks

Well, just to make sure that you have NT remote installation setup correctly see some of these tips (This was a post I send someone having problems with non-domain SMS pushes but most of this will apply to you)

OK...its fully supported to install the SMS client on workgroup servers.. here's how (assuming we are talking about SMS 2.0)

1) Make sure that your workgroup servers fall into the subnet boundaries of your SMS site. (Your boundaries are probably ok seeing how you can install the client manually)

2) Add the appropriate SMS client Installation Accounts into each SMS site. Right click you SMS site and choose PROPERTIES. In the first tab you will see SMS Client Installation Accounts. You can list more then one here... The trick is to insert the correct syntax...and here it is: %machinename%\USERNAME "%machinename%" tells SMS that we are talking about a local server account and not a domain account. So if you have a local admin account called SADMIN on each workgroup server, you would enter this %machinename%\SADMIN. (In your case, just specify an account that has local admin rights on your clients. This can be a domain account or a local account. I would guess that this account configuration is causing your problem.)

3)Make sure that you enable Windows NT Remote Client Installation method. This needs to be enabled.

As easy as 1 two 3. you may still have problems installing the client. But if you read the error messages on the client as well as in your SMSINBOXES/SMSRETRY bucket, you'll be able to see why the install isn't taking place. Most reasons include: ADmin$ not available (start the server service), resolution problems (configure central WINS server or add lmhost files), user account disabled or missing on client server...

-hope this helps...

Thanks very much for the help,
now for a real stupid question, is that the exact syntax or do I substitute for the sms server (%machinename%\username)or the pc's I'm trying to install on?
Thanks again

This is only for configuring SMS to use local machine accounts that have administrative rights on the local boxes...

Typically, if you have an environment that were all setup to have the same local admin username and password, this technique would be good to use.

The format is:

%machinename%\USERNAME "%machinename%" tells SMS that we are talking about a local computer account and not a domain account. So if you have a local admin account called SADMIN on each workgroup computer, you would enter this %machinename%\SADMIN.

yes, actually put %machinename%...not the actual machine name. If you had to put the exact machine name, there would be no point in the variable.

Thanks again for the help, I'm thinking this might not help because I already have listed the smsservice account there which is already admin

i have a similar setup
and to be truthful sms cannot handle a change of ip address
you are better installing it remotely when the ipaddress is correct
i use the smssender account to do this and it works fine - y

Thank you Terry for the reply, you think I should wipe it, and reinstall, I tried a site reset, that didn't help
