Whats the difference?

OK here’s a weird one for you!

Windows 2000 Professional
Office 2000
40G HD
512 MB Ram
too many other proggies to mention all of which have been on the system for quite some time AND the system worked fine a month ago. This issue began about 3 weeks ago and I have been asking other resources to no avail.

Windows Explorer hangs for a bout 4 minutes when accessing any drive when I use the keyboard shortcut (windows key + E) to access windows explorer.

Windows Explorer loads fine however, it's when I click on C drive that Windows Explorer hangs. This happens in Safe mode and Regular mode and with any drive I click on.

At the same time ( while I am waiting for the contents of c drive to appear) I can double click on My Computer located on the desktop and then double click on the c drive and run around doing pretty much anything I want with any drive.

Sometimes the 1st attempt using the keyboard shortcut will still be hung and I have to end the process via ctrl-alt-delete.

Most of the time though, once the lag time has passed, I can function normally until the next time I start Windows Explorer via the Win+E key sequence.

Any ideas as to the cause and a way to fix it?

NOTE: I have done a complete repair re-install of Win2KPro and the problem remains the same.

Run defrag like diancecht said but first id run scandisc. Go to my computer, right click on c and left click on properties. CLick the tools tab. Now click the check now box and check box boxes hit ok and it will mention that it cant perform till next time you restart and if you would like it to perform when you restart. Tell it yes, restart your computer and let it run it then after it finishes and windows loads run defrag as diancecht mentioned.

ok... I tried all of the above and I am still experiencing the same issue.

Make sure smartdrive is enabled in the bios. See what it says about your drive. Also go to start, run , now type in msconfig and hit enter. Click on the startup tab. Type out only the items here, and only the ones that are checked.

How about AV/Spyware check?..

Run drive manufacturer's diagnostic (you may just have a failing drive) - as well as AV/spyware check. Run at least 2 anti-spyware apps (I usually run adaware, spybot and MS Antispyware.

Might be worthe checking event log (run eventvwr.msc), and running task manager to see if there are 'strange' apps using up your resources (though AV/spyware scans should pick these up).
