whats going on here?????

hello all i need help again.i have 1 user that when everytime the work station pc is restarted of log off(windows xp pro)their account is locked out on the server(windows 2000 server)it is the only pc in the place that does it.no remote access is set and the log-in's are always correct the 1st time(i.e. account lock out policy)i havent a clue why this is the only one doing it.I even tried(just for the sake of trying)gave it admin rights and same problem.?????thanks

bronto to your questions yes it is the domain controller,yes they are members,and no thier were no policys set..this problem started occuring about 2 weeks ago everything was fine until then,i mapped the drive but as soon as i restarted locked out again..glenn admin and users are members of this folder.i give...maybe ill just try to reinstall xp in the machine and see what that does it just seems really strange that this is the only pc that does this in here and it locks out whos ever account was on that pc at the time of shut down..and that it didnt start until about 2 weeks ago when the new guy started,ive went thru the xp machine settings to make sure nothing was changed there and only 1 person has rights to get into win2000 machine to make any changes to setting there.ill try the card like you said glenn we'll see what happens there...hey thanks again for all the help ..and oh that 12 pack is down to a 6....hey i was stressing out here

Try fdisk, and use it for a paper weight. One pc isn't worth all this stress.

paper weight???i wouldnt give it that much respect,im thinking more in the lines of a new type of micro-wave oven tester...just one more question is it a real pain to re-install win2000 over top itself just incase this doesnt work?i relise i'll have to set-up the users and trusts and some programs again but other then that(pc came already with 2000 installed).hey thanks again for all the help

GO BACK TO W2K! I've heard more nightmares about xp than you'de believe. That may have been part of your issue. 2000 is the best thing ms has come up with, and if it weren't for there greed they should have stopped there and concentrated on making it even better. Glen A. Johnson

Fist off, I apologize if I reapeat something that has already been said, as I have just skimmed over this thread.

Have you looked at your account policies? On the server, go to Start, Admin Tools, lLocal Security Policy, then go to Account Policy, Then Account Lockout. Make sure nothing is defined here. The important column is the "Effective Settings".

Also, can you try turning on user auditing on the server, that may give you a clue on why the account keeps getting locked out.

dan thanks for the reply...tried turning off all that stuff the effective setting was set for not defined still did the same thing...ill try out that user auditing and see whats going on there

try removing the XP workstation from the domain, deleting it's computer account from AD, and then rejoining....

tried that one last week bronto...now for some reason its starting to effect other pc's as well..i dont have a clue as to what happened ...im thinking a re-install of 2000 might be a good idea ...you think???everything is backed up and its only used as a file server not web..what do you think im sure it cant hurt anything if i did..can i just install win2000 over top itself or should i just do a clean???again i sure do thank everyone thats trying to help.

since it's a DC, reloading it will knock all of your workstations out of their domain membership. I don't know how many machines you're talking about....could be alot of work.

You tried a manual reset of the password from AD, then set the accounts to "password never expires"?

And, turning on auditing and checking the Security event logs (as was suggested previously) is a good idea....

hey get this bronto and glen..i changed the way that they log on to windows xp and made them log on to windows before the get in and ill be damned if it didnt log on to the server with no porblems..why that made any kind of difference i have no idea but it worked...
