What would I use to learn some network programming? 1

I want to make a couple small programs. Basically these two programs would both exist on the same LAN and would be able to communicate with eachother, sending files back and forth. If you know anything about a Render Farm, that's sort of what I am going for here. Have one computer act as a master machine that would send out several files to several computers and then those computers would do some stuff with the files and then send a new file back.

How would I approach this type of scenario? What would be a good programming language for it? How about the network part of it? I've never done any network programming. Where would I begin?
