So far i have not had to worry about this, but it could happen via virus, drive failure or fire.
what are the steps is it as follows
example drives fail
1 replace drive
2 install 2000 server hot fixes/service packs
3 install backup exc
4 restore backups
(would the drive size's have to be the same as when the backup was created?)
what sort of back ups do admin's do on a regular basis?(registry, boot.ini)

1 replace drive
2 install 2000 server hot fixes/service packs
3 install backup exc
4 Import last backed up catalog
5 restore backups

The drive size does not need to be the same size, it just cant be smaller than the size of the backed up data.

As far as backups on a regular basis. You should do incrementals during the week on drives that where the data is frequently being updated or changed. Than do a full backup on the weekend, or at time when the system is being used as much.

Thanks for the replies
Do i have to create the partitions first or will these be restore when the backup is run

BEWS will not restore the partitions! You have to create it manually...
