What will the old Telcos be replacing DSL with to compete with cable

Does anyonw know what will replace DSL. It is so slow compaired to cabl I can't imagine the Telcos just sitting by while customers keep switching to cable for TV, Internet and Telephone.

In Australia we're going Fibre optic and phasing out copper to the home (assuming the politicians get it right)!

I don't think DSL will be replaced, it will just die and the Federal Government will subsidize the old telcos. I wish that I could figure out a way that I could get government money with out any sort of business plan.

In the larger US cities some of the carriers are rolling out fiber to the home - I believe it is called FIOS or something like that, but it will take a long time for us rural folks in the small cities to get that kind of service.

Verizon Fios/ATT Uverse are the newer technology. It's fiber based with limited (but growing) availability. Both Verizon and ATT contracted with DirectTV to provide TV service. Verizon Internet bandwidth up to 50Mbps (fiber to the house point of presence), ATT Internet bandwith up to 24Mbps (fiber to the closest distribution point and copper to the house).

all telcos in the USA use fiber in their network/outside plant somewhere. Verizon's FIOS brings it right into your home to an ONT. AT&T is still 95% (approx) xDSL. Yeah, they have fiber strung out and about but most of it only goes to a terminal box within 3 miles of your home. From that terminal box, it's copper to your home. The other telcos are pretty much like AT&T. Verizon is about the only telco that has gone against the boys on Wall Street's recommendation and ran fiber to the home/premises.

The problem with Verizon is that they "cherry pick" the towns/cities that they offer FiOS.

FiOS is available in my town and I have it @ home, but even within the town, Verizon has "dark zones" where they do not have fiber installed and have no plans to install it. The same holds true for cable TV providers (Comcast & RCN).

dex, a good example of what your talking about is in my area. I have FIOS at my house for 2 years now and my next door neighbor asked for a qoute a month or so after I told them how happy I was with it. They were told that it was not avalible to them for almost 6 months after me. The actual box sits right in between both our houses but the road has a curve right there so my address is xxx AVE and theirs is xxx STREET. Our houses are only about 30 feet apart but Verizon told them that did not matter it would be avalible to them at a later date.

How is the "UP TIME" or reliability of fiber vs DSL and COAX?

To the best of my memory, I haven't had any outages relating to the fiber or converter.

To continue with what hawks posted, the church I attend is in a dark zone for Verizon, Comcast & RCN. The utilities are all underground and none of them will extend fiber/coax to the building.

The ease of repair of any equipment failure is inversely proportional to the urgency of the need for its use...


I sure hope you didn't type that you've never had any down time from the circuit you are referencing! )

I have had fios for almost 2 years. I have NEVER had a failure, blip, nothing. Comcast cable would die for 15-20 minutes every other week with a 4+ hour outage maybe every other month. I mostly work from home via vpn data and a vpn phone so I do use it at least 60 hours a week and I know when it's down pretty fast.
