I have 2 hardrives in one dell computer.. running xp pro.. one HD is 40G the other 120G the 40G holds the system..
Now.. I need a stable system since i create music and thats why I added the second large hard drive..

In order to keep the system in good shape.. i installed DiskAlert Home.. and now what happens is that when I use the 120G drive I get this message "Critical -- system reported an error paging" I click OK then it does it about 3 times more and then the system freezes.. then I have to reboot.. and the same thing happens again.... This happens when I am accessing music files or burning from it..etc..
Any ideas? Suggestions? Questions? Please help if you can...

Have you tried running Chkdsk on the drive that is failing?

The drive's manufacturer will have free diagnostic programs you can run to check out the drive.

Any help from the programs maker?

DiskAlert is alerting software that gives you EARLY WARNING when a disk is no longer 100% reliable. In most cases, you have enough time to copy the data and swap out the problem disk before disaster strikes. DiskAlert also lets you know when free space is getting critically low.

Thanks for the suggestion..
I gave that a shot...
Both Hardrives tested fine from their prospective diagnostic programs..

Diskalert site wasnt very helpful either..

This problem seems to occur only when trying to access the drive..

example..
I burned 30 files (10megs each) with roxio from the 120G drive that gives the error.. and blam error came..
I copied that folder unto the system hardrive and there was no error message..

I am thinking of reformatting my hardrive (the secondary one) hopefully that will help..

at last option i am thinking of reinstalling the OS again
:(

Any more things i could try?

I am assuming you are using ide drives. Do you have them both on the same channel? And which channel is the burner on? You might try switching them around and see if a different configuration helps.

Are there any clues in your Event Viewer? Also are there any clues when you run Msinfo32 from the Start Run box?
Anything showing in Device Manager? Any of the Troubleshooters from Device Manager any use to you.

Perhaps running Sfc /Scannow from the Start Run box may do something when it checks your system files.

You may have better luck with DiskAlert support if you Email them.

Do you get these errors if you uninstall DiskAlert?

Thank you all for the tips.. I did have the drive on a different channel.. I had figured it would be best to have them on 2 channels..ie more direct fast speed.. but I switched it to one and I havent had the problem since (fingers crossed).. but now the knawing thought of.. did I forgo internal speed and relaibility because of my lack of knowledge of the card or how to use it? I dunno but I guess I have to stick with the stable rather the optimal till I get a handle on things XP... :]

Thanks all

I have been building PCs many moons.

Standard practice is to put fast devices, (hard drives) on IDE channel 1, and slow devices, (CD-ROM Drives, CD-ROM Burners, tape drives) on IDE Channell 2.

Older BIOS would reduce bus speed to the slowest device on the IDE channel. I don't believe that is a problem with more modern BIOS. However, you may have found another problem with putting hard drives on seperate IDE Channels.

Also, newer PCs have a different style cable for the fast ATA drives of today, and it is more expensive and typically only installed on IDE channel 1. The 120Gb Drive is definitely a fast ATA 100 or Ata 133, and should be installed on the new cable.

I continue to install the hard drives on IDE 1 and Slower devices on IDE 2.
