Hi,

I am trying to install an additional Windows 2000 server onto my network, and when I try to install AD I get the follwing error message "domain name does not exist or is uncontactable". I think this might be because the existing W2k server doesnt have the right protocals installed. Any ideas welcome..

as long as you have the same protocol as that of the domain controllers and the link between them and the new domain controller is good, u should be able to communicate with the others with no hassle.

i would suggest checking ur spelling of the domain and the connectivity of the new DC to the net.

Thank you for your help.

That's intitailly what I thought; same protocol on both machines will work fine, so that doesn't seem to be the problem. Furthermore, the spelling is correct for the domain. However once I go through the steps in the active D wizard and for adding an additional domain controller, after i have done everything it asks for I still get an error message (not an active directory domain) when AD is configuring itself for the final step.

The protocol you need is TCP/IP - which you will have installed by default.

The problem is either incorrect name as suggested by Jeffrey or more likely DNS. Check using nslookup to verify you can resolve the name of your existing DC - you should always check DNS settings before installing a new domain controller - Active directory will not function without DNS - so this is probably your problem.

Hope this helps
