I've got a 25MHz 8Mb 486 with a 1GB disk which I sometimes use in DOS mode when I want to experiment with some algorithm or mess about with I/O ports. I'm just wondering whether it will run Win95 SE?

What is the minimum spec for Win95SE? I can't find it on the MS site.

Windows 95 ran on 486's when it was issued. Since Intel had not yet released there pentium processors. So yo should be fine

I have an old Acer, 486, with 8mb ram. and it runs perfectly. I can even hook it up to the network, and browse the web with Netscape 2 was it, or 3 im not sure.

The Point is 486's will run Windows 95.

However they will not run Windows98.

Ignorance is not necessarily Bliss, case in point:
Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.

Do you mean win95 OSR2? (there's no 95SE - there is a 98SE).

That machine will run 95 OSR1or2 - but not too quickly.

Thanks - it was for OSR1. I think SE is OSR2 but it is probably the same. I'm not installing IE so it doesn't matter. It says 4Mb - I have 8 so in theory it should work. I was going to try NT but the min spec for that was 16 Mb.

I'll give it a go and let you know what happens.

Yes - and it works. I wanted something that could run Direct Cable Connection. Just transfer rates against DOS6 Intersvr. At least now I don't have to stick in floppies at both ends and reboot. Also I don't have to have the strange combination of a Win98 boot up disk with intersvr on it.

I have faster machines but somehow this old beastie has some appeal to it. I suppose it is like working on a steam engine.
