Sounds simple enough, but the reason I bring this up is that all 'assembled' computers I've looked at had the RAM stick plugged into the socket furthest from the CPU. Now, looking at this from an RF point of view, the best place should be nearest to the CPU right? So why was it done and does it matter? Anyone got any views on this? :p My suggestions are what I would try myself. If incorrect, I welcome corrections to my knowledge. Andy.

I think that people would regard the snall diference in distance in siggnificant in a domestic pc but u are right it would be better. Secondly ususllly people try to space things out so to make it easier to build up, not so crowded. For example if i am putting two RAM chips into a three slot board i always but them in 1 and 3. Andy can u see if u can solve my graphcs card prob.

maybe i am wrong

As far as specific cards and why, I can't answer. But ususally the slots are marked in such a way as to identify which (or which pair) should be the first. Has to do with select lines being decoded from the processor. And they are chosen to make it easier on the board layout software or for reliability of the traces or to reduce the manipulation to get the signals in or out. On the boards that have autoidentification and selection it doesn't matter because there is circuitry that is set up each time to do the selection and the circuit paths remain the same until the next cold boot. Once other reason for placement may also be heat management.
