What is overclocking? and how would i do it? And also, is it good for my cpu?

Does anyone know how to overclock a ASUS a7v socket A via kt 133 Motherboard?

hey chandler,
what do you mean overclocking a motherboard?
you can't overclock a motherboard. Anyways, I have the same board as you do. You don't overclock the board, you overclock the cpu. To do this, you press DELETE when it says to press del to go to bios. Then it should be the 3rd tab, there is a thing there that asks if you want to keep the default setting of the cpu memory clock or have it set manually. Change to have it set manually. Then you should be able to change the multiplier for the cpu. it should be 100 at default. How it works 1ghz = 10 * 100 = 1000mhz. If you pick 105mhz, it should be 1050. And if you're insane, 150 = 1.5 ghz. This setting also sets your memory. So be sure to have a really good memory to do this. If you want to do voltage increases, consult somebody else. Again, increase by 5mhz at a time. If unstable, reset to old settings.
Anyways, I wanna know if you overclocked your Geforce or not.

actually is there like any jumpers on the motherboard that i can configure to overclock the cpu is what i acutally ment. I didnt overclock my ge-force mx yet. I will but i have to buy the blue orb first like u did. and thanks for the help man

oh hey i just now relized u have the exact computer i do. so u stopped playing quake huh...did u remember your fps on it?

the only disadvantage of overclocking is that the heat of the cpu gets hotter?

hey chandler,
sorry I didnt respond right away. . .It's the weekend. Well, normally, the jumper configurations are in your mobo manual . . .If you still have it ;) Otherwise, I am going to give you a helpful website on overclocking.

That's just a few. Anyways, I didn't really play online for quake. I didnt really check the fps either.

And yes the disadvantage in using jumpers is the heat increase because you are increasing the voltage to the cpu. That is why I suggested to do the bios one because it doesn't really affect heat that much. -Feryl

Oh i see...thanks...and by the way...how would i tell if the ge-force 2 mx is overclocked or not when i put the blue orb on? would it show me more frames or something?

Well chandler,
You can try a benchmarking program for graphics and performance.
Here's the one I have used before:

They do some graphics test on your system and rate it. Try testing without overclocking and try testing with overclocking so you would know the difference.

about you putting in the blue orb in your MX...how did u plug the fan in? did u plug it in the MX card or was it like a 3 pin plug in the motherboard thing?

I placed mine on the 3-pin plug on the mobo. -Feryl

No prob chandler.
If you need more help you can post. We can make this a REALLY long thread. ;-) -Feryl

You've a long way to go until you beat 'Windows 98 edition shutdown problems' in the Windows 95/98 forum - currently running at 120 posts! (Sorry, irelevant to the subject matter I know!) My suggestions are what I would try myself. If incorrect, I welcome corrections to my rather limited knowledge. Andy.

Hey Andy,
Yeah I know :-(. I just realized that when I went there. I was totally amazed that that thread went since 1999!!! I guess windows has a lot of explaining to do. -Feryl

oh ok now that you've mentioned it...i've acutally got a lot of questions...i only tried to stop caused it makes me feel like i'm wasting your time. =) well anyway.....my ata100 7200 rpm HD gets burning hot!!! how long will this last if i dont ever use a hardrive cooler? is this a huge factor?

Hey chandler,
Do you have a tower or a mid-tower or a small case? With all of your configurations, you should have a tower like I do :) Anyways, a tower can have lots of airflow and more room to your system. Which means it is going to cool down everything cuz you can put a space between your drives. Well I wanna know first if your hardrive was hot when AFTER you were running it for several hours or was it hot after a few minutes after power on. Test it. If it gets too hot, then I guess your hardrive needs some cooling to extend the life.
Oh, I need to know what kind of HD it is so I can look it up. -Feryl

hey feryl,
The hardrive is a WD ata100 7200 rpm and it gets real hot after few seconds with the power on. I dont think it was this hot when i bought it 7 months ago. oh yeah and i have a mid tower...i guess thats why my cpu is so-so hot.
but i leave the side open and plus i have 2 case fans one blowing in and one blowing out. with the side open..would having the tower or mid tower make the difference? it seems really spacy in there tho. i organized the cables so theres lots of room of air flow.

Hey CE,
Thanks for the hyperlink. It was interesting to read it.

Chandler: Yeah a tower is better but if your case is spacy and is not cluttered, it should be fine. Just have a little desk fan blowing on it on the side. This should help the air flow with the side open ;-) -Feryl

Depending on the case design, you may have better luck leaving the side cover on; in some cases, cooling properties (specifically air flow paths) depend on the case being fully assembled.

If you have plenty of cash, you can look in to cases specifically made to aid in cooling; I use a Tornado 1000 from 3dcool.com, although I'm not overclocking anything in my current hardware setup.
