What is overclocking? and how would i do it? And also, is it good for my cpu?

Hi;

Overclocking is a very broad subject and covers many factors

Follow this link:

I think it will answer most of your questions.

Ed Please let me know if the sugestion(s) I provide are helpful to you.
Sometimes your the windshield... Sometimes your the bug.

Unless you play the fastest, bestest, gruesomest, highest bit-depthest games, then I would say over clocking is a bad idea. Heck, who needs a 1.7GHz processor just to type in wordpad? LOL
My son's computer is actually UNDERCLOCKED and the CPU will probably last forever - it barely needs a heatsink! Anyway, that's my view on the subject for what it's worth... My suggestions are what I would try myself. If incorrect, I welcome corrections to my rather limited knowledge. Andy.

well i only play quake 3, thats about it. thanks for the website

Quake 3 huh? Well maybe just a little bit of overclocking then? Although you will probably benefit more by clocking the graphics card if this is possible in your case. Depends on the card. My suggestions are what I would try myself. If incorrect, I welcome corrections to my rather limited knowledge. Andy.

oh gosh that would be nice to overclock the videocard. I'm on a ge-force 2 MX. 700 duron cpu chip if that helps.

I don't know if that card can be overclocked by mere mortals but I would say the processor is more than up to the job. I actually use the same card and find it O.K., but for faster frame rates you could take the painful route of buying a GTS or pro spec. card or you could reduce the bit-depth to 16-bit rather than 32-bit. That should speed things up a bit. (May battle against you on-line one day!) My suggestions are what I would try myself. If incorrect, I welcome corrections to my rather limited knowledge. Andy.

My friend has a g-force gts 32 meg vid card whose frames max at 90 fps on quake 3. The same fps max on my g-force MX. The only difference is that on high quality maps, for example: the gts would frame at about 50 fps while my MX would frame at about 40 fps looking at the same exact point on the map. I find these 2 cards very similar, except at the time...i bought my card (the mx) for 110 dollars. While he bought his for 200. Is his card messed up?

Hey you guys,
I have an Geforce2 MX too. Mine is twinview. I have my Thunderbird 1ghz overclocked a little bit to 1.1ghz. Want my system to last a little bit longer. Didn't increase voltages or anything though.
Anyways, I also have my MX overclocked because I have a blue orb fan on it. And YES!! you can overclock an MX. Here's the utility: or for win2k:

I only have mine overclocked to what is now called a Geforce2 MX 200. I tried to overclock it like Geforce2 MX 400 but I thought I did not need that much overclocking. Yes, hardcore gamer. Played Quake 3- not anymore. But I play CounterStrike all the time. If you play CS, well I am 0##]pAnDmOnUM>>.
Right now I get 100fps online.

Your g-force 2 mx didnt have a fan to begin with right? and you would use the same thermal paste for the cpu for the gpu too right?

No mine did not have a fan to begin with and I used the thermal paste that came with the blue orb.

hey how did u plug the blue orb in? did u plug it into the vid. card or motherboard fan slot?

Hey chandler,
Sorry I did not check this thread yesterday. My MX came with a heatsink on top of a chip. Get rid of this heatsink and put the blue orb over the chip. I tried leaving the heatsink on there but I can't. The fan is a heatsink too anyways (i think).
Well hope that helps.

Oh, If you used that coolbits registry for geforce, I would like to say to overclock it more on the MEMORY side instead of CPU clock. You don't want to burn the chip. The memory can handle it though.s-)

How would we set about overclocking the memory? Please? Pretty please? My suggestions are what I would try myself. If incorrect, I welcome corrections to my rather limited knowledge. Andy.

ummm, well I didnt really want mine to be insanely overclocked but I did try a setting once with my geforce2 mx. I did 200mhz CPU clocked. And I set the memory to 205mhz. It ran stable. According to my 3d Mark benches, anything over that does not matter on the quality of the graphics.

Hope this helps ya. -Feryl

Oh, a tip on overclocking:
From the default:
CPU and MEMORY should be incremented 5mhz at a time. Then test it. If it crashes or freezes, turn back to the last setting. If you think you are on the destination mark, STOP unless you want more or want to burn your chip. Normally there is a limit to the slider of Hardware Options on the Geforce registry. This can be tweaked of course.
If needed, Benchmark the graphics and performance and see if a little bit more would improve it.
