What is diff. in CPU models?

I want to get an Athlon XP 1800 CPU but the compatibility chart for my Aopen AK77-333 mobo suggest getting model 8 of the CPU. There is no mention of this model number on any specs. I did see on their site (AMD) that their is a model 6 and 8. Anyone tell me which is which?

Its the core difference - Model 6 is the older Palomino core - Model 8 is the Thoroughbred. The model 8 uses a smaller die as the internal size is smaller - so it produces less heat among other things.

Just bare in mind the smaller thoroughbred core needs a copper based or similar heatsink (as per AMD recommendations) this is because of the smaller heat transfer area.
As the XP1800+ isn't a particularly HOT CPU it doesn't really matter if it is a Palomino core type that you buy, both perform exactly the same and the Palomino doesn't necessarily have to use a copper based or all copper heatsink. Your supplier will advise you which he has in stock. Martin Replying helps further our knowledge, without comment leaves us wondering.

thanks for the advice. I am planning on getting the cpu soon I will be sure to get a copper based heatsink in either case. My concern was mainly that the model 6 was NOT suitable for the mobo..and there is no problem there.

I would recommend buying the retail version of the processor... 2 benifits... it comes with a recommended heatsink and fan...and 2 it comes with a 3 year warranty as opposed to the 1 year on a OEM product..
