I need to know " What is an IRQ in Windows XP Pro?

An IRQ is an interrupt request. This is not so much a Windows XP thing as a hardware property although the operating system needs to monitor interrupts.

Basically, when a piece of hardware needs to get the operating systems attention it sends a signal (an interrupt) through an IRQ line.

This used to be an issue in the old days where you had to manually assign the IRQ lines but Plug and Play has made it something that most people will never run into.
