Hi guys-

What agents do I need specifically to backup Exchange 2000 server using Veritas Backup Exec... Should one be officially called Remote agent for Exchange? or just agent.. this is confusing.. Am currently running Veritas Backup Exec using DLT tape drive on one Windows 2000 server and on a different Windows 2000 server I've got Exchange 2K running.. just need to be sure my employer has the right Veritas components..

I used to only use the exchange agent, I may have been uknowingly using the software incorrectly because with newer versions it seems you cannot access the server for backup without the remote agent as well.

So I guess my answer is Remote and Exchange agent.

If your exchange server is on a different server than your backup server then yes you will need a remote agent along with the exchange agent.

The main software is for the backup server any other servers require the remote agent for windows servers.

any other add on to the server (ie Exchange - SQL) require thier on agents as well

thx to all you guys! That definately confirms that I need both remote and Exchange agents running.. I KNEW IT! Now to prove this case to my superior.. I hate using that term but thats what she is!

the agent for exchange includes 1 remote agent.

If it doesn't leak oil it must be empty!!

Is that remote agent a 2000 server agent - cause I just ordered 9.1 and had to buy both the Exchange agent and the server agent.

When you buy the Exchange Server Agent it comes with a Remote Agent, if your backup software is on the Exchange server (so you don't need the Remote Agent) you are entitled to use the Remote Agent with any other server. The one Exchange Agent works with Ex5.5, Ex2k and Ex2k3.

From what I can deduce from the Veritas licencing agreements you only need to actually BUY the Remote Agent if it is going to be used to back up a Windows Server NT/2k/2k3 machine. If you are using it to access a workstation, you don't need to buy a licence.

Ok lets straighten this out

Senerio

1 server(Mike) the DC (windows 2000)with the backup tape mounted
1 server(Sam) (windows 2000) Running Exchange 2000

You will need the following;

To back up Mike - Full server version (required anyway)

To Back up Exchange 2000 - the Exchange remote agent

To back up data that is on Sam (not the mailboxes) the Remote agent for NT/2000

If you are not going to (or don't need to back up data from Sam then you don't need the remote agent for NT/2000

workstations - nothing needed.

There now its straight.

also, you need Outlook on Mike using an Exchange Administrator priviledged account so it can access the Mailboxes. Its documented in Veritas' Exchange agent. This is exactly what I do and it works like a charm. Removes those ugly 5MB daily logs too .. YEAH!

RPHIPS,

Ok, one more thing though. when you say in order to backup Exchange 2000 you'll need the Exchange remote agent.. installed on what box though.. Mike or Sam?

and I assume you'll need the remote agent for NT/2000 installed on Sam??

thx - sorry for the added confusion but I need to fully get this mess straightened out..

thx again!

You load the main backup software on mike and as it loads it will ask if you want to load remote agents say yes and it will prompt you to enter the serial numbers and what servers you want to load the agents on.

then its done

It will push the agents onto the desginated servers

Whats funny is its the same software but you need the keys (serial numbers) to mait function properly.

Hope this helps It is really quite easy -

The Exchange Agent is not a remote agent (rphips refers to it as the Exchange Remote Agent) the Remote Agent and Exchange Agent are two separate agents.

The Exchange agent will enable you to backup the Information Stores etc, the Remote Agent will let you backup data on a remote machine.

If you have the Backup Exec software on the Exchange server then you only need the Exchange Agent, if it is on another machine then you need both the Exchange Agent and the Remote Agent.

The Exchange Agent is ALWAYS installed on the media server (the machine with Backup Exec installed), the Remote Agent is installed to the remote machine that you wish to access

More information is in the "Installing the Exchange Agent" section in the Backup Exec help.

bash - you don't need Outlook on the server to back up the mailboxes. Just a service account with backup operator status.

In fact, Outlook on the Exchange Server will allow MAPI links to all mailboxes and is a massive security risk. All you gotta do is sit at the terminal and you can read all emails...

Well duh - "The Exchange Agent is not a remote agent (rphips refers to it as the Exchange Remote Agent) the Remote Agent and Exchange Agent are two separate agents."

Wrong chose of word on my behalf didn't realize everyone was going to play with words - Since there is no such thing as a Exchange remote agent - it would have to be the Exchange agent.

"the Remote Agent is installed to the remote machine that you wish to access" - It is actually pushed to the remote machine from the media server.
