Hi everyone. I am a newbie with windows 2000 server. Licensing is set at per server, and have 20 CAL's for it. I keep reading that a CAL will be used for every concurrent connection. Just to satisfy my "legal" curiosity, does this mean if I have 10 files opened from a network drive, my computer will be using 11 CAL's? (one for the computer, and 1 for each file opened).

each CAL maps to each computer accessing the server, once you reach the number of cals you have, no more computers can access the server at that time. A+, MCP, CCNA

That's understandable. But does this mean that I can work on as many files as I want without my CAL's increasing?

yes , is not a problem of files, is about workstations connected to the server.ONe workstation uses a connection and can open as many files( on the server) as it can handle, and it will only use one CAL.
You might buy more CAls than workstations you have, just in case you add more workstations in the near future. A+, MCP, CCNA

Ok. I have been monitoring the licenses for 4 days now, and it jumps(from 11 to 22). what would do this? Not to mention in the product view, the Per Server Reached says -112. What's up with that? What does it mean?

HOw many computers do you have (as workstations)
For workstations to interact with the server in the normal behaviour , they will need each, one CAl, then you will need cals for TErminal services, for Exchange (Email) services, etc A+, MCP, CCNA

8 workstations and 2 network printers. I dont know if network drives count, but I have 3 of those. Also, our IM system uses an account.
