Well, I'm not sure what forum this belongs in, but I'm trying here.

I'm running windows XP home, 256bm ddram, and trying to play a some video files. 100-200mb in size, .avi divx stuff. I'm using windows media player.

Everything was working fine for the first couple of days, but today, halfway through the episode I was watching the video starts slowing down and pretty much stops playing, while the audio continues on. As soon as I go off full screen it works fine again.

What really puzzles me is that this just started out of the blue... no other programs are running on the computer. Tried rebooting, that didn't do it. Any suggestions?

What version of Media Player are you using?

Have you checked your Video acceleration settings in Tools | Options under Performance Tab | Advanced?

Do you have the latest drivers for your video card?

Cheers,

Have you installed any programs (or run any that you use infrequently) just before this started happening?

FRESH UI and TWEAK XP PRO are known to cause problems with WMP.

Maybe you could use System Restore to return to when everything worked.

Perhaps running the DXdiag tool will throw some light on the matter.

If you have the Alpha 3.11 codec installed, try uninstalling all codecs and installing stock 3.11a. OR if you have installed the DivX 5.02 codec, which will automatically take over 3.11 content playback, make sure you are not using the Tsunami patched version.

Have you tried Codecviewer?
Go to

And download the codecviewer
Then open the avi in the codecviewer, see what codec it uses.
Then download the codec, install it.

If the codec that is shown with the codecviewer is already installed on your system you can try,
1)Reinstall or
2)Try another player and see if it works there.

Sis had same prob and after she reset video cache, she went back to WMP 6.4 in her XP system. Says it works better. (although I can't get my XP to accept anything but 8 or 9)

Hmm, I will try the dxdiag and reinstalling the codecs today. As for the drivers, yeah, I have the latest. If that doesn't work, I guess I'll try to find an older version of wmp.

thx everyone
