I've tried turning it on or off in the Administrative tools, doesn't seem to make a difference.

Thanks guys, and sorry, should have made that a little clearer - Computer has two users on it, but we're getting the 'Windows 2000' style login, instead of the easier to use (for the kids at my school) 'Windows XP' style, one-click and you're in Welcome screen.

Cheers

Some 3rd party applications, such as PCAnywhere, replace the Windows XP logon routine with their own. This script is designed to correct this, and allow you to use the Windows XP Welcome Screen.

Usage: Download fix_xp_logon.vbs and save this file to your hard drive. Navigate to where you saved it and double click the file. A confirmation dialog will appear when finished. You may need to log off/back on or restart your computer for the change to take effect. This script can be viewed in Notepad or any text editor, as to the specific Registry key and value that are updated.

To make the Welcome screen available, follow these steps:
Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click User Accounts.
Click Change the way users log on or off.
Click to select the Use the Welcome screen for fast and easy logon check box.
Click OK.

Check your settings in Group Policy.

Computer Configuration\ Administrative Templates\ System\ Logon.

Description:
Determines users'logon experience and the configuration of programs run at logon.

Um, I think if you join a network the welcome screen is replaced by the ctrl+alt+del routine. I'm not sure you can change that once you are part of a network. Could this be the problem?? And if anyone knows a way to change it back to the Welcome (choose user) screen from within a network I would like to know as well. Hope I'm not way out in left field on this...hope it helps.

Hi All,

My XP Pro starts in Desktop despite all the above being tried... (Thanks for the great suggestions and links)

In one link ...

it advises

Note: To open User Accounts, click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click User Accounts. Fast User Switching is available only when the Welcome screen is turned on.

Note: To disable the Welcome screen you can also open the Registry editor and go to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version\WinLogon

In the right pane, remove the entry for Gina.DLL.

I cannot find ant reference to Gina.dll

I dont know if this is relevant or not...

I am beginning to suspect a corrupt 'something' but exactly what I dont know.

Ok so I think I have solved it.... (In fact I know I have solved it)

faq779-1381

I ran controluserpasswors2 as instructed in the faq and noted that the "Users must enter a user nname and password etc etc" check box was unchecked... Why ???

Why isn't this in the USER acconts of the control panel..

My problem is solved...

Sorry for the annoyance...

But your links and suggestions were fantastic
