Ok, I just recovered my computer with my IBM Product Recovery CD. The default profile it made was "Owner" with no password. I changed the name to my name and the password to my password.

Now, it comes up in a Win2000 style login box with Owner as the name and says "The system cannot log you on...",etc

THEN I can login myself from the Welcome screen.

How do I get rid of the Owner part??

Have you updated to SP1?

312131 - The Owner Account Is Displayed As "Account Unknown" in Profiles on Windows XP Home Edition-Based Computers

You might see an account with the name "Owner" when you first log on. The owner account, with computer administrator privileges, is created during installation if no user accounts are set up at that time. You can rename this account with a user's name.

Have SP1, still the same thing.

Also tried renaming it back to Owner, creating myself an account, then deleting Owner. same result.

Got all Windows Updates....nothing.

Can you delete the word "Owner" in the Login box and type in your correct Username and then type your Password?

In User Accounts can you change the way users login and use the Welcome Screen?

Type Control Userpasswords2 in the Start Run box and see what options are available to you under the Users tab and the Advanced tab.

Have a look at group policy for Local Computer Policy/ Computer Configuration/ Administrative Templates/ System/ Logon, and see what options are available there.
