I have a friend's Gateway computer that had a new harddrive put in by Gateway. Problem is now that if you shut it down, it will shut down, but in about 5 minutes it will boot up again....Wierd????

I've tired adjusting the Power options, but that didn't help, and of course I've tried calling Gateway tech support, but that's like dealing with a bunch of 1st grader's.

Would appreciate any feedback...thanks

* Be specific - what Gateway PC? What OS?
* What is the background on viruses, spyware, Win updates?
* Are you in the US?
* What power quality - are you having brownouts, voltage sags, spikes?
* Are you using a UPS, is it new?
* Is this a laptop, desktop, tower, server?

--------
* Ask for a senior level manager of tech support.
* Browse & search their online forums.
* Post this message in:

-----

* Use Belarc - Do a system audit, determine mbd's mfr. Make, Model, serial number.

* Contact the mfr of mbd. - such as ASUS, Award, Intel, etc.
* Has the BIOS firmware been updated? Who makes the BIOS? What version?

* Have you made any changes in the BIOS settings stored in the CMOS for Power, Wake on Lan, etc. ?

* Have you done a selective boot? Remove none critical components from system down to bare bones. Only use most important devices - mbd & battery, power supply, keyboard, mouse, floppy drive, monitor & video card, cpu & ram. Boot up with MSDOS 6.22. Does this still happen?

----
* Tom's Hardware website has many useful nuggets of info on Mbds & other items.
* Use Google, Dogpile, Copernic, etc - search for booting problems.

* Post this in Microsoft forums also.
* Check largest PCUG's such as HAL in Houston, see Members are very knowledgeable.

* Keep us posted on your progress.

Should have been more specifc. Gateway Computer in question is a desktop running WIN ME, have to double check the model. I've run ad-ware, spybot, Panda anti-virus and all the Win ME updates. Double checked drivers.....Not using a UPS, but Voltage I don't think is a problem, brand new building.

However, didn't think to double check/update BIO's.
Will also look into some of the other suggestions.
Like I've said, this is a weird one and just when you think you've seen it all, your hit with a new one...
Thanks

The only reason I mention this is cuz I do it occasionally.
If u go to "shutdown" does it bring up the screen with "restart" instead of "shutdown" optioned?

Da-vi'do
