weird pc sounds

It may be nothing but I thought I would ask anyway. If answered, just post on forum.

While on my sister's pc and online every once in awhile a different sound is heard. There is no new email so that can't be it. No updates were running. Just online and reading info from different sites.

Anyone have any idea how I can check out where these sounds are coming from? I sure hope they are not virus' being put on the pc. Any help will be appreciated.

Virus's don't make sounds.

What kind of a sound is it?
Is the HD light flickering rapidly?
is it a squek, click, bang, grinding, you need to give us a clue.

Without any further info I would have to say it's broken.

Not true. I remember the old DOS days, and the "Yankee Doodle" virus.

Meanwhile... last time I heard the complaint of "weird sounds" coming from the computer (speakers), someone had installed WeatherBug.

Check your system tray.

Some external speaker systems pick up network activity from nearby cell phones/crackberries. I always know when a cell phone in the vicinity is in use or scanning for the network.

Speakers will also pick up stray sounds from rf sources or nearby radio transmitters if not properly shielded/connected/grounded.

However a description of the noise would be helpful as acewarlock says.

If she is running a messenger program it can not only make a noise to indicate mail it can also notify of users on her list signing in and out.

The sounds are what sounds like an ape or a jungle bird (?), then there is what sounds like a plop, again I'm not sure that describes it, these sounds just happen while using the pc. Even when not online.

She does not use messenger so that should not alert.

I'm not sure if AOL has anything to do with these sounds, but she does have some issues with aol. I told her not to get aol but she did anyway.

Any help will be appreciated. Thanks again for all of you inputs.

does it happen when you do something in particular, like open a menu or minimize a window?

Try Going into Control Panel, then click on Sounds and Audio Devices. Then go to the Sounds Tab and scroll down the list. Look for sounds in Minimize or menu pop-up see if they have anything set.

Your sister might have a Sound scheme setup there.

There is no evidence of Apes or Jungle Birds in the Windows Sound Events, which might suggest that this is being produced by a third party application.

You could search in Program Files for .wav files and see what turns up as a result. Then you could play them and see if any Apes or Jungle Birds appear. As there are other types of sound files, and locations where things may be hiding, you may have to vary your searching.

If you want to check out the Windows Sound Files for a possible "plop" they are stored in C:\Windows\Media.

Might not be a Windows default, but some apps like to customize sounds. And back in the day of Win98 there was the Plus+ add on that would contain color schemes as well as sound schemes, one of them being a Jungle theme.

I had a PC that I thought was making an elephant's sound (whatever it's called) and it was driving me nuts. I shut down the PC and the sound continued. Turned out to be an oscillating floor fan.

Just a reminder to eliminate environmental variables. Take the PC to another room and see if it persists. If so, first place I'd look would be the case fans. You can jam them with a toothpick or a piece of paper once the PC's shut down.

Of course, once the fan is eliminated as the culprit, get it back up and running ASAP.
