Hey,

AD Users & Computers won't load. Any other microsoft management console will, just not U&C. Click on it and it changes the cursor to the "Busy" State.
Then a min after that, nothing! Steve Hewitt

Strange - never seen this but I would guess it would be something to do with the fact that it can't contact whichever DC the snap-in is focussed on.

Any other clues - event viewer messages ?

You could also run the netdiag tool from the resource kit
which will test connectivity between the pc and the dcs in many ways. If you get a FATAL error somewhere in there - you'd likely have the answer.

I'd be interested in nowing what causes this one !!!

Cheers

I agree with welshguy. We need more info. Is this the only server? Is there anything in the event viewer? Is there any other network problems? James Collins

Sorry, I really can't give you any more info on this one! Nothing in Event viewer helps at all, everything seems ok! The annoying thing is that I desperatly need to add a user :-)!
I can load a blank mmc, but if I try to load up the AD U&C it just shuts the whole mmc down.

I could really do with you help on this one! Steve Hewitt

I am not near my AD server so bare with me (Its 45 miles away). If you go to Windows Explorer and look in the WINNT folder, I believe in system32, there should be the AD UC icon. if you click on it there will it come up? James Collins

I can't find the AD UC Icon in the folder you said Butchrecon. This has been happening for about a week now. I just put it down to a chkdsk was needed and/or reboot. Just a bug. I have SP2 on the server and its really buggin me.
Do you know what the AD UC icon is actually called?

Also, this network is a very small "Extranet". Its another smaller one just for 3 or 4 users. There is just one server on the this network, that acts as the DC, File Server, Printer server and Router to the net.

I really don't think it is a corruption on the disk with the snap-in- (watch me be completely wrong now :-) )

I think it is a connectivity problem with the DC in some way. Just because you found no problems/corruption on the disk and the way it hangs.

I would still run netdiag as above or try connecting and adding an object using adsiedit - this would need to connect to the AD in the same way as User/Comp snap in - so may blow my theory away completely ! Unless the AD&UC is focussed on an incorrrect DC.

Very interesting problem though - although you'd probably have a different description !!

Good luck

This netdiag tool. I run it in Command Prompt? It doesn't recognise the command. I don't have the resource kit.

I'm completely at a loss! Somebody please, help me! Steve Hewitt

I found the AD U&C File in C:\winnt\system32\dsa.mmc
It doesn't work. :-(

Any other ideas? Is there any way of solving this?

Many Thanks Steve Hewitt

Oh and you won't have adsiedit either then - sorry !
You should definately get it netdiag and adsiedit are invaluable troubleshooting tools. It's free to download.

Are you running the user/comp tool from the server or a workstation ?

Have you tried connecting from another Pc ? (I'm sure you have)

Check DNS - use nslookup and check DNS records on server.

Yeah, I've tried it.

I do get a strange message when I do though. Its a weird complex one. Give me your email and I'll send over the screen shot over.

Steve,

better send to my personal

neil@communique.u-net.com

Cheers

HI!

First check if DNS is up and working.
test with:

ping MYDOMAINNAME.COM
nslookup
and the DNS management console.

Also, check if your server was infected by NIMDA or other virus.
Stop and disable IIS if you are not sure, then install and update and scan with Anti-Virus software.

Bye

That's a point didn't Nimda rename or do something to mmc files. My money is still on DNS on this one though.

Cheers

BTW Steve
I didn't get the screenshot ?
Have you solved it !!!

Hi,

Sorry I haven't responded, been off for a few days.

I'll send the screenshot tomorrow afternoon. I think you may be right on the DNS thing. I do get quite a few errors that are DNS related. Its not in the DNS Log though, its in the system log. I'll post the message tomorrow as well.

I did have the Nimda virus when it first came out. I thought I wiped it and got it fixed, but I'll do another full scan and get the update, reapply the fix etc.

Many thanks Steve Hewitt
