when I type in my ip (squirrel/qmail/apache(php)/courier IMAP) mail server won't come up at all now. I don't know what I did. It was working fine.

Now I get:The page cannot be displayed
The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings.

where do I start. what do I try. Is anybody out there? hello?

I had to type in ifconfig my.ip.address.here because I turned the computer off and back on. I am so used to working with windows where one has to turn the computer off frequently. Guess that's not something one needs to do with linux. How about that.

You shouldn't need to configure your network card on reboot every time, you should be able to have it automatically come up on boot.

But you're right, you shouldn't need to reboot.

So what config file can I add my ip address to so I wouldn't have to add it upon reboot?

Wish I was back at Indiana University in that computer class taught by J. Fieber. I didn't understand most of what he said. I would understand more know. He definitely prefered FreeBSD. But we already had RedHat CDs laying around the house....

So how come nobody answered my other message about trying to get my mail server working over the internet?

Requested action not taken: mailbox name not allowed
Server replied: 553 sorry, that domain isn't in my list of
allowed

I do it sorta different, but if i want to use static IPs i set them with ifconfig in /etc/rc.local, i know there is a better way of doing it...but as the old saying goes "If it isnt broke, dont try and fix it". I dont know about your other problem with email, i'm fighting a losing battle with vmpop3d right now so i understand what your going through. You may want to go over to the sendmail forums and ask them, i used webmin and postfix so its a little quicker for me.

Setting your IP's up automatically depends on distro, as they each do it a little different.
