(b)connecting to another PC which is connected via modem (he had MSN Messenger 6.1 - there was some message that webcam is not supported BUT audio didn't work either
(chat worked again)

By way of experiment, temporarily place Messenger as a Trusted Application in the Application list for Outpost. See how it goes, but don't leave it there.

See if any of the points discussed here help you.

Audio conversation using Messenger in XP
thread779-751662

(a)What does "Make sure you have installed the uPnP component from the Windows XP "Network Services" folder" actually mean ?

(b)Did I understand it right - we must have the same Windows Messenger also ?

Well, it does sound rather complicated (unlike the instructions/info that comes with MSN Messenger ;-)
(did send a mail to Microsoft but no answer yet - will
dig a bit more in meantime)

I extracted the following issues from the thread you indicated - anything to add ?
-DirectX is updated to 9.0b
-We should both use MSN Messenger 6.2
- We can download trial version of Port Explorer to see what is happening
-turned off QoS Scheduler in the Network Properties
- Remote Assistance enabled
-Make sure you have installed the uPnP component from the Windows XP "Network Services" folder.
- Not clear on Windows Messenger ?????
- Not clear on Windows version (can we use different Windows ?

I'm thinking of trying to see if it works without firwall/router just with the Windows inbuilt firewall and ports manually opened.

That rather long thread involved over several days of constant communication as ideas and suggestions were bandied about, tried and discarded. Points made during such an exercise are in context and probably relevant to an enquiry from a preceding posting. I included that thread more in a way to show you some of the things you could look at, and work through to see if they help.

Personally (from my own experience) Outpost firewall maybe your main trouble causing area, not with its messenger rules, but with the way the program itself handles them. That's why I suggested the first thing to try involved Outpost.

As to your general questions.

(a) would refer to the Add or Remove (Windows Components) and the Networking Services where Universal Plug and Play is listed if your press Details while Networking Services is highlighted.

(b) there are problems caused more on your machine if you have two versions of Messenger installed. There would be a reference to a MSKB article in that thread.

Different versions of Messenger on Different machines should not be a problem (but it is something to experiment with).
