Hi:

I have Windows 2000 Server running on my server PC which acts as Web server and mail server.

When I try to connect to my website from outside, I get the error "Cannot find server or DNS Error ".

The Server is connected to a Simens Wireless Router 2624 and ports 80, 110,25 , 1723, 445 and 3389 ports are open already. I can connect to the server from ouside using VPN and check mail using Outlook. I can ping my Server. I also can Terminal service into my server.

ONLY THING WHICH DOES NOT WORK IS MY WEBSITE.

When I try to see my website, it gives me on the browser the following message

"Cannot find server or DNS Error "

I need desparte help on this.

Please help

Thanks

Is there a domain name pointing to your server IP?

Chris.

Hi Chris:

Thanks for yoru message. How do I check that if there is a domain name pointing to my server IP ?? Please help.

You're the one who would know that really, It would be you (or an agent) who registered the domain name and set the DNS to point to your public IP to find the website.

can you get to a website using where xxx etc is replaced with your external IP?

Hi:

I can;t get to website using my external IP. It gives me the same error .

Thanks

Hi:

also I checked with the place where I registered my domain. Their IP record points my domain name to the external static address what my ISP gave to me. so that part is good I guess.

Ok more info is needed from you otherwise, this is going to be a very long thread of questions and answers.

have you set a host header in IIS to point to the correct site.
have you done any testing using internal IP/name
is site set up to respond on port 80?
is the name of the default document correct?

uncheck "show friendly http errors on your browser" so you see the actual error not just the generic "can't find that"
post the domain name.

Hi:

The host header in IIS is set to point to the correct site. And also the port 80 is set up to respond. The name of the default doc. is correct. ( I have not done anything on that ). About the second point, when I am connected using VPN, I can open the site by giving the internal IP address but not with the name.

Thanks

Perhaps the web server is not running. Having you tried to connect to your web site from the server on which it is hosted or even a computer on the LAN

If it does not workover the LAN it wont work over the WAN
