Web Menu Bar how to create / usability discussion

How do you create menubar like the ones used on the microsoft website.

Are there any reports on usability of the drop down menu bar used on web sites and do they work on web tv.

Well, it depends on what technology you want to use. I have done similiar (drop-down, flyouts) using behaviors, straight javascript, flash, etc.

Web TV compatibility? I confess, I have no idea.

They work quite well, but you have to be careful of your design. Use logic and don't get entranced with the ability to add this feature. Meaning, don't overdo it. I've seen plenty of examples of how not to design a menu like that and made a few mistakes on my own.

If you have good vision, solid logic and stellar artwork or artistic skills, I would highly recommend using flash to design them. I won't try to sell you flash here, but check into it.
