Does anyone knows how i can distribute a
report with the web component server?
where have the reports to be placed?
what has to be done with the IIS?
can user see the reports without the dhtml viewers then?
On the courses I present I do a large picture of all the ways a report can be sent to a user so they can view it.
the web component server is one of the methods to take a report and present it to a user. The key factors there are that the report and data can be processed on the web server, and that the user is able to view the report via a browser and a report viewer componet.
CR7 was when this functionality first appeared, it was working well with the release of CR8 and then CR8.5 and Crystal Enterprise had an even beter version. CR8.5/CE can deliver most of the report viewing functionality via html so no fancy downloads required.
I've got a demo site running the 8.0 web component server if you'd like to take a look.
If you are just sending your remote users a RPT file then they need a local way to view the file. A 3rd part report viewer or their own copy of CR or a web component server are some of the ways to do this.
Crystal = Install web component services on same box as IIS. Runs as ISAPI service.
IIS = Nothing to do if already a running web server.
Server = Create ODBC to database for Crystal.
Reports = Install in folder \inetpub\
Web Page = Put HTML HREF pointing to the .RPT file.
User Browser = Will try download of Crystal ActiveX on first hit to report.
NT/2000 = Permissions may drive you nuts.
