One of my PCs shows 50% CPU activity in the Task Manager Systems entry. Normally this is 0%. I traced the problem to the WebClient service by disabling it in msconfig.

On my other PCs this service is running but does not show any activity normally or briefly before going idle again.

I suspect this service DLL is corrupted. What DLL is involved and how do I reinstall it without reinstalling Windows XP completely?

See if you have any errors logged in the Event Viewer.

This update was released yesterday. Maybe it is a cause or a fix?

MS05-028: A vulnerability in the Web Client Service could allow remote code execution

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.
