forgive my lack of knowledge but is there a web-based system available for monitoring SQL Server instances and the server they are installed on?

If yes could you point me in the right direction

Hi mit,

It depends what you want to monitor. Not always so much web based, but I have used Spotlight and Foglight by quest software in the past. Spotlight is real time diagnostics and Foglight is more for historic data analysis and warnings depending on metrics.

Cheers,

Matt.

Matt,

cheers for replying - I should have added some more detail.

Need to monitor health of server CPU, memory etc.
Whether scheduled tasks have completed successfully.
Locks etc.

Hope this helps.

Mick

Yeah - those 2 will do that. Download the free trial of Spotlight and have a quick play with it. Foglight monitors pretty much the same stuff but keeps a historic database and the metrics fire off on any time delay you like (i.e. checks the CPU every x minutes (you specify).

Or did you want something that is constantly real time on your screen?

Matt,

Sorry to bother you, I've heard Microsoft provide a management console ( Microsoft Operations Manager 2000 / 05 ) have you any experience of this product?

Cheers

Mick

No bother Mick - that's why we sign up here....for the help!

I have had a little experience, but mostly from the back end (as in looking after the databases and setting them up etc.) of MOM.

Just spoken to the guys who do the reporting - MOM would take a bit of setting up to get exactly what you want (but so will any monitoring tools). Personally I prefer the Quest stuff for what I want, but without knowing the ins and outs of your daily requirements then it is hard to comment. It would also depend on how many servers you want to monitor (i seem to remember paying £3500 for 3 years for 5 servers with Quest which wasn't too bad seeing the holes it got me out of!).

from the 20 mins I just spent with the guys who know the front end, it seems you have to set up the servers / metrics etc. on one side of MOM then use the SQL Reporting services on the other to write reports and obtain what you want. As I say, not had too much experience with MOM, and depending on what you require........

As a DBA solely, I prefer Spotlight / Foglight!

Cheers,

Matt.
