A little while back i saw a product demonstrated at a high school that allowed students to login through a web page and access their work folder. It used IIS and web folder sharing as far as i could tell, so IIS hosted some virtual folders that would redirect users to their work and they could view it like explorer.

We would like to do something similar at our school and would appreciate any input on either better ways to achieve this (on a budget we already have 2003 server and IIS installed) or suggestions of a way using IIS.

Does anyone here use a solution like this?

We have an external IP and a Cisco firewall in place already and we use WSUS to keep all of our servers upto date so i'm as confident as we can be for a small setup that we are "secure".

Thanks for any input.

* Setup an ISS site to the root of the users directory (where all users subdirectories are)
* In the settings for this ISS site, allow "Directory Browsing"
* Install a self-signed certificate (you're on a budget!)
* In security settings, only authorize SSL connections
* Set a rule in your cisco to authorize SSL connections to this site (careful, with SSL you'll need a dedicated IP, you can't do name-based virtual hosting)

This way, your users can access their directory (will rely on the NTFS security for browsing), download files, but not upload (which is what you want, if you don't want to deal with locked files, and hacking issues).

Hope it helps.

This all sounds just what I am looking for, how do I get a self certificate?

either use iis resource kit or go to someone like smartcom

For an internal SSL cert just install certificate services on a Win2k3 machine and 'apply' for one!

Thanks guys i think i'll set up a test box and give it a try.

It was also suggested that TSWEB / Citrix could be an oprion for some staff and pupils do any of you use either and could you give me an idea of price between the two?

Thanks.

I have TSWeb installed on all my TS boxes. I install it into the root of the default web site, and require SSL for it.

Do your users use this in application mode? Is it not just used for remote admin?

Cheers.
