Hi, (also posted this on IIS boards)
I'm looking for a free, open-source file management system. Something simple - I want to provide my users with access to their files from home. Each user has a home folder on the network as well as access to some shared folders. Essentially I'm looking for something as simple as "My Documents" and "Shared Documents"
Any ideas, suggestions, recommendations?
cheers

Why not use a VPN to let them get the files? It's secure and works well. I don't think you will find an opensource program that integrats into windows the way you are looking. I could be wrong, but I've never seen anything like that yet.

nope. bad idea. trying to educate people on how to setup a VPN from home.. no way.
but thanks for the suggestion anyway.

Terminal Services is more secure than VPN, and you can ship them an RDP shortcut via email.

You should still need some sort of VPN solution otherwise you are potentially opening up your network to everyone in the world....litterally.58sniper had a good suggestion..use Terminal Services too, that will help with the speed issues that will certainly be raised.

what about WebDAV ... I've started to look into it but I haven't a clue how to set it up so users can browse their home directories/folders.

Terminal Services requires licensing which is an expense I don't think we're gonna swallow... 900 odd users.
Seriously - it's got to be web-based (over SSL) to keep it really secure...

Then you're looking at 3rd party solutions, like some sort of web based FTP. Or better yet, something like Sharepoint.

isn't there something not using FTP?

there are many online 3rd party sites that offer free memberships to store your files online. But the users might have a problem since it's not what they are used to. Me, i just have them e-mail the files to them selves if they need to access it at home.

Trying to do alot with what little I know. Thank you

thanks, yeah I'm aware of online storage, but it ain't an option for us either... I guess I'll keep looking for something. (not sure exactly what though.)

cheers
