Im using crystal 8.5 and is there a way to setup a user interface so when they click on the file sales.rpt i think rpt is the extention, anyways when they click the file is starts a user interface to get the paramater fields for collecting the report? So if i were to click sales a dialog would come up and ask me for date, and customer number then generate the report...

This is what crystal reports already does by default. If there are parameter fields it prompts you for them.

How is the existing prompting not to your liking?

Yes.

Are you speaking of reports distribution to users who do NOT have Crystal installed?

Sicne you don't know the file extension, and didn't bother to verify, I'll assume that you're new to Crystal, and don't want to do any coding nor used advanced techniques.

There is a compiler available for CR 8.5:

There is also a companion product called Crystal Enterprise which came with some editions of CR 8.5 that allows for WEB based viewing.

Or you can write code, such as VB.

There are also 3rd party viewers:

If this doesn't help, please state how you intend for users to interface.

Yes the file ext is .rtp and i can do some coding anyways basically im making the reports and there are 3 other users whom are tech illerate so they almost touch a computer it crashes if u know what i mean anyways the paramater insert is good for getting the paramater and they have access to opening the report if need be but i wanna make is simple so when they open to get a report then it starts with asking for paramaters instead of having to click on the little lightening bolt

If you build your own viewer application, you can achieve exactly this behavior. In Crystal, afaik, you can't.

There are 3rd-party viewers (see list at and most of them probably provide this functionality. I know my DataLink Viewer does...)

CUT, Visual CUT, and DataLink Viewer:
view, e-mail, export, burst, distribute, and schedule Crystal Reports.

I gave you numerous options, check them out and report back if you have questions.

"but i wanna make is simple so when they open to get a report then it starts with asking for paramaters "

When they open what, the report directly from a folder? Taking a hatchet and cracking open a hard drive? You're being very vague.

"and they have access to opening the report"

How? Please answer the question posed and state how you intend to have the users interact (web, Windows, an existing or futurte inhouse application)?

The extension is rpt, not rtp.
