I'm not sure what you mean by this. First of all, you don't "uninstall" an operating system like Windows. You can remove it simply by formatting the drive. Also, Win98 operates fine in both FAT16 and FAT32. You said you converted "to" FAT32, but what did you convert "from"? The fact that you're running in FAT32 shouldn't matter to 98.

Yes, after the drive has been formatted, you should be able to boot up the PC with just the XP CD. Put it in the CDROM drive and enter your BIOS at startup. Make sure you change the boot priority to list the CDROM drive before the hard drive. Reboot and you should get a prompt saying to hit any key to boot from CD. It's all downhill from there.

If this didn't answer your question, please see the FAQ listed in my signature below on how to state a more descriptive question.

i went on the microsoft website, it said you can go into the add/remove programs, and click remove windows 98, if your hd isn't converted to FAT32, but mine is. anyways my win98 runs fine, but i want to install windows XP.
thanks i will checkout your link.

I'm not sure where you read that at Microsoft's website. You cannot go into Add/Remove Programs and remove Windows 98 - Windows is not a program! It's an operating system in which programs are installed onto.

Also like I said earlier, FAT32 should not affect whether Win98 can be removed through a format of the hard drive. Post the MS article you found so we can take a look at what you're talking about.

Finally, it would help if you could give us a complete description of what you are trying to accomplish. If you just want to remove Win98 and install XP, just format the drive and run setup from the XP CD at bootup.

this is right from Help Topics in windows 98:

"Uninstalling Windows 98

You can use the uninstall process if you need to remove Windows 98 from your system and revert to the previous version of Windows. Before making a decision to uninstall, there are some important things to consider. Please read the notes below.

to open the Add/Remove Programs Properties dialog box at the Install/Uninstall tab.

Important
Do not uninstall Windows 98 if you compressed your hard disks after setting up Windows 98, or after you have upgraded your compression.
If you did not choose the option of saving your MS-DOS, Windows 3.1, and Windows 95 system files during the installation of Windows 98, you cannot restore your previous operating system after you install Windows 98.
Notes
You can also open the Add/Remove Programs Properties dialog box by clicking Start, pointing to Settings, clicking Control Panel, and then double-clicking Add/Remove Programs.
If you converted your hard drive to the FAT32 file system after installing Windows 98, you cannot uninstall Windows 98. However, if you had FAT32 before installing Windows 98, you can uninstall without a problem.
You can uninstall only once for each Windows 98 upgrade.
If you uninstall Windows 98, any programs you installed while running Windows 98 must be reinstalled. You may also have to reconfigure your swap file."

But that's not important because you answered my question, that i can format my hd and install XP no problem.

thanks

"You can use the uninstall process if you need to remove Windows 98 from your system and revert to the previous version of Windows."

You are not reverting to an older operating system, so this procedure doesn't apply to you.

Howdy:

"You can use the uninstall process if you need to remove Windows 98 from your system and revert to the previous version of Windows."

This would ONLY apply if you upgrades from Win95 to Win98 using a Win98 upgrade cd !! Did you do that?? I doubt it so the earlier advice is your only option !!

I don't know the deal here but you can install xp home on fat 32. I do all the time. It gives you the option. If you are upgrading to XP you really don't need to have another system there but you do need your key numbers.

Is your cd a full blown version or an upgrade? If it is not an upgrade the do the following. Boot to your WIN98 bootdisk and run fdisk. Delete all partitions then reboot cpu to WIN XP cd and follow directions.
