How can I make the "Quick Launch Bar" show more than the 4 default icons? I would like to be able to have control over the size of the Quick Launch Bar when starting Windows 98. I can always "pull" it openfor the present session, but it would be nice to have windows start up with it he way I would like. I have searched many "tricks&tips" but have not found any reference to controlling the size of the quick launch bar.

Hi,

First make sure you can move and resize it:
- goto Control Panels|Taskbar and Start Menu
- click on advanced tab
- see the box at the bottom with the scrollbar, scroll all the way to the bottom
- check the box that says, "enable moving and re-sizing"
- then close that
- right click on the quick launch bar , goto view and set the size of the icons
- choose if you want text labels or not
- then using your mouse carefully put it at the top of the quick launch bar until it turns into a vertical resizing cursor then drag the quick launch bar up or down.
- also you should see lines vertically on the quick launch bar, simply drag those left or right to give more room

Hope this helps! NATE

Thanks Spyderix, But I don't see anything of which you speak.I looked in the control panel, nothing about taskbar&start menu.Did you mean to say in the settings of the start menu? if so there is nothing there that pertains to my question, which relates to the Quick Launch section of the Task Bar.As I said before,I can resize the quick launh bar bay pulling it open but I want to find the registry setting that says how long it should be by default when windows starts up.

Hi,

What exactly do you want to do here? Do you want to show more icons on the quick launch bar, or is it being hiden on startup and you want it to stay the same size without having to pull it up all the time? Can you explain a little bit more, I'm a bit confused as to what you want to do here. Sorry if I'm missing the picture here.

Hope this helps! NATE

I want to show more icons in the quick launch bar when windows starts. I have no problems with the bar as it is.I can make it longer, which will expose all of the icons, but when i restart windows it defaults back to the original configuration which is 4 icons with the rest of them hidden untill I click on the >> or drag the bar open. The QLB is working perfectly just as Bill Gates ordered it,only I would like my way better!

OH OK!

I see what you mean. I have a question for you. Is this computer yours or a business machine on a network?

Do you have multiple user accounts setup on the computer?

The reason I ask. If the computer is a permanent computer at your business they might have deep freeze on.

If your computer has multiple accounts then maybe it is loading a default profile instead of yours when starting up.

Do any of those things apply?

Hope this helps! NATE

the puter is mine at home. You mention the fact of the puter loading with a default profile,ok,What I am looking for is how to create the profile to include the number of icons in the Quick Launch Bar.

Hi,

Do you have multiple users set up? If not then you need to make sure that there are no users, therefore the computer will always start the same with the same preferences.

When you first start your machine, does it ask for a password?

Hope this helps! NATE

Hi,

So, does you computer ask for a password on startup. If so then you need to disable that.

To do so goto:
- CONTROL PANELS
- GOTO PASSWORDS
- Click on User Profiles Tab
- Then select the cirlce next to:
"All users of this computer use the same preferences and desktop settings."

Then re-size your quick launch bar the way you want, then restart and see if that has solved your problem.

Hope this helps! NATE

As I have said before I can resize Quick Launch Bar but when windows restarts the Quick Launch Bar always will revert to the 4 icon size. I believe there is a registry key that sets the size but I can't find it.

I have 5 on my quick launch and have had 7 so I know it will work. Oh I have win98 also. When you right click on the bar is quick launch checked in the tool bars menu, also I removed [desktop, chanels and IE] from my q launch, maybe that had something to do with it?? SPIDER-- I also do not have a reference in control panel for task bar and start menu, are we messing something that should be there, on mine it's in the start menu under SETTINGS. I'll have a look in the reg. and if I find anything I'll post back and if you find a fix let us know. "for future use" good luck Jackha

OK.. Fixall,, I found it in the reg. no max. no. but it did tell me where it is. Go to win.explorer windows\application data\microsoft\internet exp. open quick launch and you should be able to copy and paste or drag and drop whatever you want on it. I just copied my favorites to mine, now I'll have to take it off.. See if that don't work for you..jackha
