I have a BS in accounting and a computer science minor from years ago and want to learn to program professionally without having to go back to college. What minimum compentencies and/or certifications should I obtain in order to be employable and in-demand? My ultimate goal is to telecommute and do contract programming.

What type of programming do you want to do. Do you want to be a web developer, do Java or cold fusion. Lots of stuff out there. Not to sure where to point you because the market is so big.

I can tell you that, for most jobs, telecommuting is yet but a dream (especially true in my field - database development). Contract piece-work is probably more practical in Web development, because you have a great many small companies that don't want the drag of an employee or long-term hourly contract, and are attracted by fixed-price arrangements. The downside is that you'll need to have a collection of skills, including design, graphics, HTML, databases, etc. Robert Bradley
